Enhancing BMS Software Development with Model-Based-Design and IEC Certification Kit

      Giovanni Vagnoni, FEV Iberia SL

The electrification of vehicles has become a critical trend in the automotive industry, driven by environmental concerns and the need for efficient, sustainable transportation. As electrified vehicles gain prominence, the development of a robust battery management system (BMS) becomes essential to ensure optimal battery performance, safety, and longevity. Since 2007, FEV has been leading the development of innovative automotive BMS at both the system and software levels. Navigating the demands of OEMs and adhering to stringent standards like AUTOSAR, ISO 26262, and ASPICE has been a formidable challenge. The call to action is clear: how can we pioneer an innovative leap that propels BMS software development into the express lane? In this talk, hear how FEV leverages Model-Based Design and IEC Certification Kit from MathWorks to ensure that BMS software adheres to rigorous safety and reliability standards. Beyond the conventional Model-Based Design tools like Simulink® and Embedded Coder®, FEV explored additional possibilities offered by IEC Certification Kit. System Composer™ plays a pivotal role in this transformation, particularly concerning AUTOSAR software architecture design. Requirements Toolbox™ facilitates seamless traceability between artifacts. Simulink Check™, Simulink Design Verifier™, Simulink Coverage™, and Simulink Test™ accelerate verification and validation activities. Lastly, learn how IEC Certification Kit streamlines compliance with relevant standards by providing a reference workflow and prequalified tools. FEV found that model-based approaches and IEC Certification Kit significantly enhance BMS development efficiency, reduce time-to-market, and improve overall system reliability. By aligning with industry standards, FEV ensures safety and compliance of BMS software in modern electrified vehicles.
