Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a functional neuroimaging technique for mapping brain activity by recording magnetic fields produced by electrical currents occurring naturally in the brain, using very sensitive magnetometer, such as Tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR), it is a magnetoresistive effect that occurs in a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ), which is a component consisting of two ferromagnets separated by a thin insulator. If the insulating layer is thin enough (typically a few nanometres), electrons can tunnel from one ferromagnet into the other. Since this process is forbidden in classical physics, the tunnel magnetoresistance is a strictly quantum mechanical phenomenon, and lies in the study of spintronics. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a non-invasive technique that can detect slow-wave activity in the brain of patients with Alzheimer's disease. These slow waves are associated with cognitive decline and can be used to help diagnose Alzheimer's disease.
