How to resolve 'Excel Worksheet could not be activated'?

Sometimes when I try to read data from an excel sheet into MATLAB, the operation terminates by giving a message 'Excel Worksheet could not be activated.' The only way I found to resolve this is that I have to restart MATLAB, which is totally inconvenient and annoying. So, why does MATLAB sometimes fail to read from an excel sheet?
