Thermal image registration: unreliable performance of imregtform

Hi all,
I have a task of co-registering a 20 min long, 10 Hz sequence of thermal images recorded by a nadir-pointing thermal camera mounted on a hovering drone, so that to obtain a stable thermal video of the ground surface.
The original images are .tiff 512x640, and show only small offset & translation (the drone maintains the position quite well during its 20 min hovering flight). An example of a typical pair of reference & moving image pair is attached.
While some images registed almost perfectly, the other remain badly registered. I've played with the optimiser and metric settings, but nothing helps.
I've also tried cutting the images to a square and thresholding out the prominent static features, such as the ditches, but the result of imregtform is still as random - it fails to perform the very simple registration task (image attached).
Please could you suggest what to do - I'm out of ideas!
Kind regards,

Hi Pavel - I was reading posts about image registration today and came across your question. I know this is an old post now, but I'd like to know if you would be willing and able to share some sample image pairs with us. If so, please send me a note using my profile page.
Thanks,
Steve
