Heat map for the United States

Suppose I have a data of population at each county in the US. I would like to draw a heat map graph for the US. Is there a tool in matlab?

This example already shows how to set up a map for the US. The only difference is the colors. Following code also show how to define your own colors

Very nice of you. How can I remove x axis and y axis. Also what is the format of the data file?

It uses shapefile as input. You can remove the axis using this
