I have problems with syms in Matlab 2017b. The computer hangs when using it.

I have been using Matlab 2017b last year and all worked well. Now it let the CPU of my computer freezes when using syms. All that have changed is that Windows 10 upgraded since I last used Matlab. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it again. The problem persisted. I have the same problem with Matlab 2018a. I have not tried to do the update on Matlab 2018a. We have a site license used by all students. They install from our IT site which gives them Matlab 2017b. I would like to know why this is causing problems so that I can assist students running into the same problem.
