If you bought it on DVD with the activation key on the sleeve or label of the DVD, then there is a possibility that it cannot be retrieved.

Check https://www.mathworks.com/mwaccount/ to see if your license shows up there. If it does then you can probably go through the reactivation process interactively by following https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/99859-how-can-i-deactivate-matlab-on-a-machine-i-cannot-access and then https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/99457-how-do-i-activate-matlab
