Why do I receive "MATLAB.exe - Bad Image" when trying to start MATLAB?

The following error message appears on startup:
MATLAB.exe - Bad Image
<a dll> is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.
Error status 0xc0000020
OR
Error status 0xc000007b

This is caused by a corruption with your MATLAB installation, usually this is caused by antivirus or other security software interfering with the installation. Please disable the anti-virus temporarily while you perform a "clean" re-installation of MATLAB. Attached below is the instructions on how to perform a "clean" installation.
