How do I draw cells from a matrix, using e.g. "surface(M)", so that the cells have different sizes based on a certain grid?

I would like to plot the values from a matrix as shown in the attached file Matrix.fig

However, I want the cells to have different sizes, as shown in the attached file Grid.fig

Could someone explain how I can do this? Thanks a lot!
