How can I resolve the MATLAB crash caused by "glibc" in Linux?

I am experiencing sporadic MATLAB crashes on Linux with the following error:
MATLAB is selecting SOFTWARE OPENGL rendering.
Fontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/fonts.conf", line 86: unknown element "blank"
Inconsistency detected by ld.so: dl-tls.c: 525: _dl_allocate_tls_init: Assertion `listp != ((void *)0)' failed!
How can I resolve this crash?

This is a bug in "glibc" not in MATLAB. Refer to this bug report for more information:
