I'm also guessing it is the case mismatch, but the same mismatch was already present in Alex P.'s code, and it passed. Very weird.

Congratulations, nice algorithmic improvement (the same holds for Nicholas) - those spiral solvers really made the difference.
I'm still happy about winning the contest of the tweakers, though. :) by Magnus S |

Congratulations on some well written code. Even though your entry did not maintain first position, I think it was nicely written.

Very nice trajectories! (my own spiral code in lasttry03 uses a worse path finding strategy but it limits the candidate movements to within a fixed radius of the current vine, which might explain why it still works better in some cases)

Damn it... still with a bug. Instead of "idtemp = rot90(id,1);" it should be "idtemp = id;". It actually isn't that bad, when this Bug is removed.

Check out the spiral on board #8 of the sample testsuite. If you want to see how it gets built, uncomment lines 1576-1583.

I'm also guessing it's a case sensitivity issue, and different versions of MATLAB have handled things differently (http://www.mathworks.com/help/techdoc/rn/f8-1009921.html#f8-1011835). Perhaps on your version of MATLAB calls to subfunctions are not case sensitive, while on the contest machine, they are. This code worked on my machine just fine (R2009a).

I'm flattered, but it is clear that Alfonso certainly can beat me (and did)! :-)

I don't understand why this failed. The call to simpleLongestPath is identical to the one in Alex P.'s ? what now? entry, which passed just fine. I didn't modify that part of the code, and it runs just fine on the testsuite on my own computer. Huh.

The final stage of my contest-long fight against cyclomatic complexity :) - unfortunately quite slow so I had to remove one of the calls to Nick's solver to make it a bit more competitive.

Not really finished, but it sometimes does what I intend. Look at the result on testsuite #84. Alas, it is terribly slow.

Is there a benefit of masking points with NaN's instead of 0 or something?
