Why are the matrix elements passed to MATLAB using Spreadsheet Link EX 3.0.3 (R2009a) surrounded by square brackets?

When I select a cell range in Excel and click on putmatrix, I can see the matrix in MATLAB but all elements appear in sqare brackets and I can't even do simple operations with them.

In Microsoft Excel, under Add-Ins menu and in "Preferences", if the option "Force Cell Array" is set; then this is expected behavior.
A cell array is a very versatile data type that can hold elements of different types; for example numbers and text at the same time. You can find more information on how to operate on them in the documentation:
