Why do I get 'Out of Memory' errors in MATLAB?

I would like to know how an Operating System manages memory, how to set the swap space for my Operating System, and how I can avoid 'Out of Memory' errors in MATLAB.

I would also like to know how to defragment the MATLAB workspace memory.
