Why does MATLAB 7.0.4 (R14SP2) hang when I try to open a PDF-file in Acrobat 6.1 via the Help Browser on a Windows XP machine?

MATLAB hangs when I execute the following steps in the Help Browser:
1. Click the "Contents" tab and then click "Financial Toolbox".
2. Click on "Financial Toolbox User's Guide", listed under "Printing the Documentation".

This bug has been fixed in Release 14 Service Pack 3 (R14SP3). For previous product releases, read below for any possible workarounds:
There are no workarounds.
