Why does MATLAB 7.0.1 (R14SP1) hang on startup when my monitor is in the portrait position?

1 view (last 30 days)
When I rotate my monitor ninety degrees to the portrait (or vertical) orientation MATLAB hangs on startup. The status in the lower left corner of the MATLAB window says "Initializing". MATLAB starts correctly when my monitor is in the traditional orientation. If I start MATLAB and then rotate my monitor to the portrait orientation, MATLAB continues to work properly.

This enhancement has been incorporated in Release 2007a (R2007a). For previous product releases, read below for any possible workarounds:
This has been verified as a bug in MATLAB 7.0.1 (R14SP1) in the way that MATLAB starts up when a rotatable monitor is in the portrait orientation. Thus far this issue is known to have occurred on Windows XP Service Pack 2 with the following graphics card:
Matrox Millennium G550
This may occur with other graphics cards as well. To work around this problem, disable the hardware acceleration in Windows. To do this in Windows XP:
1. Right click the desktop and select Properties.
2. From the Settings tab, click the Advanced button on the lower right.
3. From the Troubleshoot tab, move the Hardware acceleration slider to None.
