Why does MATLAB 7.0 (R14) crash when I run the CMAPUI function from the Mapping Toolbox?

I am trying to run the CMAPUI function from the Mapping Toolbox using the following code:

cmapui

MATLAB 7.0 (R14) crashes immediately or hangs when the slider is moved.

This bug has been fixed in Release 14 Service Pack 2 (R14SP2). For previous releases, please read below for any possible workarounds:

We have verified that there is a bug in Mapping Toolbox 2.0.2 (R14) in the way that the CMAPUI function handles the implementation of figures in MATLAB 7.0 (R14).

To work around this issue, use the COLORMAPEDITOR function instead.
