how can i simulate and animate a longitudinal wave in solids using pdetoolbox 'pdetool'?

the geometry is a square plate, wave motion is in the direction of wave propagation 'x axis'. the problem i face is that the wave motion is in the y direction not in the x direction. what can i do to solve this problem using the pdetool? the wave equation is one dimension 2nd order partial differencial equation.
