What can I do about Matlab hanging at startup?

I'm running MAC OS 10.6.8 with Matlab release 2012b. In the past, I haven't had problems with running matlab. But now I'm having a problem that Matlab start, the command window opens, the editor opens, and all looks fine ... EXCEPT that the windows don't respond to any input. I can't type on the command line or use any of the mouse driven menu options. I tried downloading and reinstalling, but that didn't help. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Please search for "Java mac" in this forum. A Java update might be the reason for the changes.

I'm not sure that I installed the patch correctly but it didn't seem to help.
