How can I get MATLAB R2008b to run on Mac OS X 10.8.3?

I currently have the R2013a version of MATLAB running on OS X 10.8.3 (current version of Mountain Lion) but I need R2008b for an older software that will not run with R2013a. I have installed XQuartz to replace X11 but MATLAB R2008b will not open. I installed 2008b as a 32-bit version. Opening MATLAB directly causes matlab to scold me for not having x11 installed and a Start MATLAB window opens with options to open from MATLAB, Terminal or Xterm. I have tried opening XQuartz and then the xterm window and redirecting to the R2008b.app directory and opening matlab directly from there, but it always shows me to "please see awg.log" error. I have tried opening matlab with the -nojvm and -maci extensions but to no avail - I just get redirected to the same awg.log error message. How can I get R2008b to work? Thanks for all the help.
