On my mac when I use the menu command it does not open a window instead it displays the text in the command window. How do I change the settings on the mac so the menu command will open a menu window?

The menu command by default will open a window, but if it can't it will display the menu in the command window. I understand that. But I want the menu to open as a pop-up window. So what settings on the mac must I change to make this happen. And how do I change the settings.

That problem does not occur for me in R2012a or later versions. What version are you using?
Are you possibly ssh'ing into the Mac, or using Apple Remote Desktop, or something like that? Are you starting MATLAB from the application icon or from Terminal? Are you otherwise able to create graphics?
