How to detect the gaze direction of the eye?

I am working on a project where I need to monitor the gaze direction of the eye quickly and accurately using a camera that takes photos of the eye every now and then. I tried searching for the darkest point after converting the photo of the eye into greyscale, but it was not accurate enough. I tried also using eyelink, but it is so complicated. May anyone help?
