Opening MATLAB .eps figure files in Illustrator CS6: Computer Modern font problems

1 view (last 30 days)
Hello,
I'm currently having problems using Illustrator CS6 to open figure files exported as an eps with latex-interpreted labels with Matlab 2012a. (I did not have this problem with Illustrator CS4 and Matlab 2011b).
The problem is: when I open the .eps file in illustrator I receive the following error (despite having Computer Modern fonts installed):
"mwa_cmmi10:
Font not found on the system; missing font has been substituted."
As a result, Illustrator does not assign the appropriate CM font and instead substitutes someonthing ugly.
It seems the underlying issue is that Illustrator or Matlab is setting the font family to, for example, "mwa_cmmi10" and the font style to "cmmi" (whereas normally it would be font family "cmmi10" and font style "Regular."
I've never seen the prefix "mwa_" (or occasionally "mwb_") assigned before in early versions. This seems to be mucking things up.
Has anyone had similar problems and found a fix?
