MATLAB crashes when I try to load/delete lines in large data files (500+ by 5+ arrays)

I have a version of R2011a that I use on my personal computer through my department's license. I usually connect to VPN when I am not on campus so that it can access the license server. Lately I've started using Matlab extensively to do plots and I've noticed over 50+ crashes every day ... literally every time I am doing something a little time-consuming, but mostly when scrolling through my loaded mat file with multiple data arrays, and when importing data and looking through the individual data and trying to delete particular rows (it always crashes when I do that for large files). I am on a July 2011 Mac Air and it's fast with SSD memory so I don't think it's CPU/memory issue. And I can't see why the VPN would cause that. I used this for coursework last semester and things like that didn't happen. It causes me to lose a lot of precious work time so I really want to find a solution. The error msg is large and I don't really know what it is trying to say. I have done a crash report but I haven't heard back yet.

This is a vague description of the problem only. You run R2011a on a modern Mac Air. The fact, that the computer has a SSD does not mean, that the problem cannot be caused by CPU or memory problems. Did you check the memory already? Do other applications crash also? Does the VPN connection crash for other applications? Which OS and Java versions are your using? Did you install all updates? What has changed since your system worked last year? Did you contact the technical support already by email?
