Can't reopen some saved figure files

3 views (last 30 days)
I am having issues with .fig files saved from the gui, sometimes the figure file fails to reopen and pops up the import wizard with the "create variables matching preview....". I always end up having to recreate the figure after this. Sometimes I can work with hundreds of the figures without problems, a few days ago it corrupted EVERY figure I reopened.
I find its less of an issue if I use saveas rather than save, but this might simply be a pipe dream, and certainly isn't a fix.
I know this problem has been discussed in the past, but I haven't had any success in finding a solution. Extremely frustrating, as we use the saved figures across several machines/users, but I'm spending more time recreating them than actually working.
Running 2012a, Win7x64.

After running into the same issue and spending some time on the phone with Mathworks tech support, I think can answer this question:
The bug in question causes .fig-files to be saved without any of the ancillary information of a Matlab plot, it's basically a jpeg in a different format. This may occur anytime a file is saved using "save", once it has occured it isn't possible to reproduce the original plot.
According to tech support, the bug is fixed in 2012b. A workaround is to use "save as" instead of "save" every time a file is saved. Affected files need to be redone from scratch.
