How to make a GUI?

I have made a pretty elaborate GUI using GUIDE. I find that when I delete a GUI component (e.g. a subpanel)from the figure, the corresponding code in the .fig file is not automatically deleted. Consequently, the .fig file continues to contain useless code, unless I go into the .fig file and manually delete all the code corresponding to the deleted GUI component. Is there a better way to use the GUIDE.
The GUIDE also creates 3 or 4 functions for each GUI component that apparently never get used and do not have any code in them, such as, Createfunction, deletefunction, buttondownfunction and keypressfunction. Is it safe to delete these? Where is the right documentation to use GUIDE and to develop GUIs manually without using GUIDE?

It is safe to delete the dead code from deleted controls. It will never be used.
The recommended way to create GUIs now is to use App Designer.
