How can I disable ~/.matlab?

Is there a way to force matlab not to write anything to ~/.matlab such as its cache and history information?
We've experienced that, when a large number of matlab instances were trying to update the same location ( ~/.matlab ) at the end of their execution, it took a long to time to exit.
