Adaptive Smoothing Method for Traffic State

I am trying to plot in 3D using a series of Speed, Distance and Time data along a freeway.

After the plot I find that smoothing is required however I am not sure how to apply the smoothing algorithm in Matlab. -

Has anyone been able to smooth and reconstruct traffic speed profile using Matlab with a similar method?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I didn’t read more than the abstract, but if you need to use a low-pass filter on your data, the Signal Processing Toolbox can design and implement a large number of filter types.
