My professor said that a bold 1 will sum of the entries of a vector to make it equal to a certain number. However, I do not know how this is done, as I cant bold characters in matlab.
Can someone show me an example? Thanks.

The sum is what it is. You can't make the sum be something specific unless you're willing to normalize it by dividing by a number, and then the solution is obvious.
