Exporting pictures after using bwareaopen

I'm new to Matlab and so I'm sure the answer is simple. I imread a .tif into matlab and then used the bwareaopen function to get rid of some smaller objects. However, when I got to export it like I would any other function with imwrite it gives me the following error: "Error using writetif. Data with 6 components not supported for TIFF files" I tired exporting it to jpg and png, but the results were the same. Does anyone know where I can do form here?
