how do I enable a local licence

I have matlab installed in my mac (running maverics). Usually I login remotely through the uni site and matlab recognizes the uni license. I received an email with a lic file to activate it locally and be able to run it without being on the internet. The instructions indicate I need to install matlab and choose activate manually without using the internet. But I already have matlab installed and when I launch it not being on the web it gives me a license error and I cannot access any interface where to select activation without the internet and where I can enter the license key.
Do I need to install another copy of matlab?
