Help on creating a program to display cars on the freeway?

In my Matlab class, a group of us were assigned a task in which we need to display, using a GUI cars on the freeway. Already now, we have cars moving but we are having trouble making the cars identify what is in front of and behind them and also if it's safe for them to lane change or not. Any help at all is appreciated. Thanks!!
