Is there a way to slow down matlab?

whenever I use matlab to do anything really complicated everything on my computer just stops working until it finishes, is there a way to slow matlab down? I don't mind waiting longer, as long as I can do other things on my computer while matlab is working. thanks.

If you have Windows, you can set the priority to low. Type control-shift-Esc to bring up the task list. Then click on the Process tab and right click on MATLAB.EXE and select Set Priority->Low (or Below Normal).
