xlsread MATLAB2010 on Mac not working

I have MATLAB R2010a and work on a Mac. The lab I work in stores all its files as .xlsx. I have tried to import these files into MATLAB using xlsread but with no success. Is the only way to do this to upgrade to the 2013 version? Thanks

My offhand recollection is that the upgrade to read xlsx files under OS-X came with one of the R2011* releases.
