How can I fit a kernel PDF to a two-dimensional dataset?

Can anyone point me at a way to fit a probability distribution object to two-dimensional data (in this case, using a Gaussian kernel)? I am effectively looking for a 2-d version of the fitdist function in the Statistics Toolbox.
(I also have the Mapping Toolbox, in case that helps)
