When I start MATLAB 7.1 (R14SP3) as an Automation server, why are there no menu options?

I want to launch MATLAB as an Automation server with the menu options, but it seems that the menu options do not appear when I do so.
The same happens when using the 'startmatlab' button in Excel Link 2.3 (R14SP3).

The MATLAB session that is launched as an automation server can have usual desktop format by typing the following at the MATLAB command prompt:
desktop
If you are using the product Spreadsheet Link EX, you can also set an option to always start MATLAB in desktop mode. You can find the Preferences tab under Add-Ins; the specific option is called "Use MATLAB desktop".
